About the Mercedes-Benz C Class

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class is the brand's compact executive car, offered as a saloon, an estate and, from 2011 in the earlier generation, a coupe. The cars on this page span the years from 2008 to 2016, which covers the outgoing W204 generation and the newer W205 that replaced it in 2014. The C-Class sits between the smaller A and B models and the larger E-Class, so it is a popular choice for buyers who want a premium badge and comfortable motorway manners without the bulk of a bigger saloon.

The range is wide. The diesel engines are the most common, and the 2.1-litre CDI units in the C220 and C250 are the usual choice for high mileage, with good economy and strong pulling power. The C300 with a diesel hybrid system appears on the newer cars. Petrol buyers will find the 3.5-litre V6 in the C350 and the smaller 1.6-litre turbo petrol in the C180. At the top of the range, the C63 AMG brings a large V8 with a sporty, characterful drive. AMG Sport and AMG Line trims add sportier styling and firmer suspension.

Owners tend to praise the solid build quality, the refined cabin and the car's composure on long journeys. Used examples do need careful checking. Look for a full service history, particularly on diesels, where timing and emissions equipment matter. Check the condition of the suspension, brakes and tyres, and test the electrical systems, infotainment and climate control. On higher-powered AMG models, ask about use and maintenance, as running costs rise considerably.
